Today's highlight was taking a ride on a pirogue along the Niger River. We had one goal in mind: see as many hippos as possible. We had a really nice pirogue with a covering to shield us from the afternoon sun and mattresses on the bottom to provide a little more comfort for the ride.
Before spotting the hippos we took in the sights of the riverbanks.
I find this picture sad, yet so typical of third world countries: mansion and shack side-by-side.
Wash day!
Nothing beats fishing with Grandpa.
See those two boys at the very back?
They were the ones making the pirogue work.
Erika got a little nervous when they started scooping out water by the bowlful.
Don't worry, we never sank.
This was our "spotter."
The ride was so peaceful and relaxing.
Just when we thought we might not see any hippos on our excursion, our guide spotted one...sunbathing.
I promise we didn't get this close.
My camera has great zoom!
This poor guy was crying. Must be having bad dreams.
Either that, or he's scared of white people!
Aren't his ears cute?
They're huge ginormous!
Our guide said one could weigh 2 tons!
Sorry, I couldn't resist snapping this picture!
No human being should ever complain about having a big backside!
We made it back safe and sound.
God is so creative!
