Day 3 in the big city.
We had lots planned and were excited to get started!
Aw, look at us! It's a roommate/cousin pic!
The Art Institute of Chicago.
Such a classy place.
These green lions, though...I just don't understand.
Poor Aslan looks sick and unhappy.
The moment we walked into the museum we heard Christmas carols being sung by a beautiful choir in the main lobby. The acoustics were great! The wonderful thing about visiting an art museum with Doh, who is an artist in graduate school, is you get wonderful information about various painters and paintings. You also get insight on what to look for and appreciate in the paintings themselves. Who needs to pay for an audio recording when you have Doh?!
We spent a bit of time learning about the famous real-life detail in this painting.
The umbrellas are especially mesmerizing, right Doh?
It's a huge painting. Brilliantly painted.
I found Monet's paintings! How fun it was to see paintings of his house and lily pond after seeing the actual places in France 2 summers ago.
Doh drew our attention to this painting.
It's famous...for something... .
I think I've seen him in my textbook before.
There were so many French paintings.
I think this one is the epitome of French aristocracy.
When I first saw this painting I thought it was pretty.
Then I read its title and I burst out laughing.
Hilarious. Disturbing. Sooo French.
I found Sherlynn from several hundred years ago.
I also found my dad from several hundred years ago.
Dad, I mean that as the highest compliment. Think about it...hours spent in praying, reading (not just the Bible, but biographies!), gardening, teaching, etc. And don't worry about Mom, she's in the convent right next door! :)
And Doh found her twin.
Seriously, look at the angles of their faces.
(I know, I'm such a budding artist!)
Some of the paintings are unbelievably large with breath-taking colors that have endured centuries!
Doh found one of her favorites.
We didn't see near everything, but after a couple of hours, we had to move on. I always leave an art museum feeling more sophisticated, classy, yet considerably lacking in knowledge about art.
Once outside the museum, we tried to maintain our sophistication as we took pictures next to the giant bean. Somehow, sophistication and bean just don't belong in the same sentence.
The artist's natural pose.
The "this looks pretty cool in my head" pose.
We walked to Magnolia Bakery where we enjoyed some delicious treats. It was hard to decide what to buy.
When we saw this sign we got excited! We were planning on watching the musical that night!!!
Doh bought banana pudding.
She had been looking forward to banana pudding for a long time.
I bought a muffin (big surprise!) and Sherlynn bought the Annie cupcake. And of course we all bought coffee.
Right across the street from the bakery was Macy's.
I have never been in such a big store. It was massive! I think it took up nearly the entire block. When giving directions on how to find gloves, one of the employees gave me street names! With it being the day after Thanksgiving, the place was crazy!
We were there an hour before heading back to the hotel to get ready for our big Broadway musical night.
Who is that phantom in the mirror?
(I just watched Phantom of the Opera the other night.)
Here we are, all dressed up in boots, ready for a fun evening at the theatre.
We were running a bit behind on time.
Quite literally.
But we made it!
Doh led us to our seats and we were so thankful to finally be able to sit down, catch our breath, and enjoy the show. Then some people arrived who showed us that our seats were actually their seats. Oops! Once moved and relocated in our rightful seats, at the very highest place in the house, we couldn't help but smile!
It was a wonderful show. I couldn't stop grinning the whole time. The music brought back so many memories of all the times, growing up in Ouaga, I used to watch the film. I've always liked it. It was the debut of the actress who played Annie and she did a great job. Miss Hannigan also was brilliantly cast and acted. We had a marvelous time.
We had more time after the show to take some pictures.
I'm not entirely sure what I'm pondering here.
The carpet, maybe?
Don't you just love Sherlynn's hat?
It was a very cold walk to our bus stop, but the weather didn't seem to bother Doh. Why? I don't know...maybe because...the sun'll come out tomorrow!
With just "a little detour", we managed to make it back to our hotel.
Our mandatory end-of-day elevator pic!
We had one more night to visit together while sipping hot chocolate in our pj's...and one more day in the windy city.
