I have only been here for 3 full days, but I have already experienced so many new and culturally rich things. I have come to the realization that the French are much more night-activity oriented. What I mean by this is that it is no big deal to be invited to go hang out at 10:30...or later. Last night, for example, Melissa and I went to go watch a badminton tournament at 11:30 pm. I know, I know, who in their right mind goes to a badminton tournament? People still play that sport? Is it really a sport? I asked Siri on my phone, and she could not give me a definite answer.
Apparently, badminton, not spelled badmington, is played in most countries outside of the U.S. It is quite competitive. Melissa said that athletes playing badminton do more running than athletes playing tennis. I'm not quite sure if I believe her, but, I was quite impressed with the athleticism displayed on the court last night. Although the gym was a sauna of stinky sweat and the French make their bleachers with steps a bit too high, I enjoyed the experience and have a new appreciation for the sport-like game.
This evening Melissa and I went to what might be considered a French version of the American mall---but not nearly so big. Before going into the grocery store we had to stop for a little treat.
Can you guess what it is?
How about now?
Look at that jar of Nutella!
Yummh!!!
I think all American malls should start selling les crêpes!
The grocery story in the "mall" we went to was sort of like a small version of K-mart. I learned a lot in the hour we were there.
1. The cheese and wine aisles far outnumber the sport (aka KU/K-State) aisle.
2. Everything is so expensive.
3. French perfume is strong, expensive, and everlasting.
(I may or may not have squirted on some great-smelling adidas perfume. Melissa said she could smell me an aisle away. We came home from shopping 2 hours ago and I still smell strong! We both decided we should go back every morning as part of our getting-ready-for-the-day routine!)
I love READING and looking at the pictures! SO fun! Makes me want a crepe really badly! And, why in the world would you go to a badminton game at 11:30 p.m.? I have gotten 1.5 hours of sleep in by that time!!! SO fun!
